Houston Bar Association (1989 to present)
The Houston Bar Association (www.hba.org) has over 12,000 members and helps lawyers work together to serve the community. For the last two years, I have served on the Administration of Justice Committee, which facilitates communication between the judiciary and attorneys. I have also served on the Habitat for Humanity Committee. The committee raises the funds and organizes the volunteer efforts to build a house each year for a deserving Houston area family. I am also on the Council for the HBA Litigation Section and help plan continuing legal education programs. The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Inc (2001 to present)
The Bridge (www.tbotw.org) offers support, provides safety, and prevents domestic and sexual violence in Houston and southeast Harris County. It is one of the largest domestic violence shelters in Texas, and also manages long-term housing for victims' families. I began serving on the Board of Directors in 2001 and served as Board President in 2002-2003 and 2006-2007. Since 2008, I have served as Co-Chair of the Capital Campaign Committee. We are committed to building a 100-bed shelter in Pasadena in 2010-2011 to provide dignified shelter for those most in need. Baylor University College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board (2009 to present)
I was recently honored to be asked to serve on the Advisory Board for the College of Arts and Sciences at Baylor University (www.baylor.edu/Artsandsciences). I graduated from Baylor in 1986 and appreciate the opportunity to help shape the education of current and future students. The board supports Dean of the college with our time, advice, and funds. University Baptist Church (2000 to present)
I have teenagers and like teaching them. Since 2006, my wife and I have taught in the intermediate and high school classes at University Baptist Church (www.ubc.org). We annually open our home to them for Vision Weekend. I have also served as a trustee for and counsel to the church. Team McGraw (2010)
This year I joined Team McGraw to help raise awareness and research funds in support of the fight to improve the quality of life for patients with brain tumors and their caregivers. My target this year is to run the New York City Marathon in November. Please follow the link (http://www.active.com/donate/teammcgrawnyc2010/tmnycm10BPerry) to support this effort. Boy Scout Troop 848 (2005 to present)
I have participated in my son's Boy Scout Troop for the last several years as a Committee Member and taught the Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge several times. We're planning on him exiting as an Eagle Scout this year.
